Heavenly Happy Hour #1- Riva Grill

“Don’t take my heart away!” Margo told the waiter when he tried to leave with the last few bites of our artichoke. We were splitting it and she was protecting the last piece while I was distracted by the setting sun and a few sips of a Wet Woody. Those two things- a frozen rum drink (that will quickly sneak up on you) and the unobstructed views of Lake Tahoe are the two first thoughts I have of Riva.

A group of Heavenly employees are on a quest to try all the popular drinking spots in Tahoe. Over the course of the summer we’ll be bringing you “Heavenly Happy Hour” trip-reports to chronicle our search for the best spot to throw a few back in South Lake.

Stop one: Riva Grill
An official happy hour doesn’t exist during the summer at Riva. Instead they offer “Wet Woody Wednesday” where they discount their most popular frozen libation to about half price.
Outside of WWW Riva can get expensive but they also have a special called “A Shot Across the Bow” which will get you a draft beer plus shot of liquor- $9 for 16oz or $11 for 25 oz with several choices for your shot.

Our scoring system has five categories. Ratings are averages from the group and are rounded to the half number.

Food: 4/5– We snacked mostly, opting for sharable appetizers instead of a full meal. Aisha from Riva claims that their California Burger is the best in town, so I’m getting that next time.
Drink: 4/5– Wet Woodys don’t disappoint, but it’s hard to score a perfect 5.
Value: 3.5/5– Beer/wine cost brought this one down. For one of the best watering-hole-views in Tahoe, you have to pay a few bucks.
Service: 4/5– Our glasses were never empty for long. Riva is split between a “seat yourself” bar side and a full service restaurant. Our happy hour mission left us somewhere between the two.
Fun: 4.5/5– Good times. Try to be out on Riva’s deck for a sunset this summer.

A few of us wandered down to the beach next to Riva after we settled the tab.

Each guest contributed one word to describe their Riva Grill experience for our  weirdest review ever:  water iconic sparkles fun trap Nate patio woody.

If you want to try Riva- don’t miss their upcoming events:
-On Father’s Day (6/15/14) there will be a brunch featuring a build your own slider bar, roast beef “Manwich” and more.
-The official Deck Opening Party to benefit El Dorado Search and Rescue is 6/18. Yes- this is a Wet Woody Wednesday so I’ll probably be there. A $20 donation gets you access to an all you can eat buffet from 5-7. Live music kicks off at 6pm, plus raffles and $3 off all Tahoe Blue Vodka drinks.
-In the next week Riva will be hooking up a new 80” TV in the bar area. This is (unless Mark Zuckerburg invites you to his new house) the biggest TV you can watch sports on in Tahoe, and just in time for the World Cup.
-Riva has a lunch menu starting at 11:00 Monday-Friday and a Brunch Menu on weekends from 10:30 to 4:00pm featuring chicken and bacon infused waffles.

If you’re interested in joining us for a happy hour- keep an eye on the @skiheavenly Twitter for where we’ll pop up next.

Did you know Massachusetts doesn’t have happy hour? I love Tahoe.
