Without a doubt my favorite part of the ski season is spring. It’s the perfect mix of amazing conditions, warm sunshine and fun events all over the mountain. It seems like wherever you ski there is something going on … music playing, people enjoying a beer in the sunshine and big events.
The USSA Championships kick off on March 29 with Moguls on Friday, March 29, Aerials on Saturday, March 30 and concludes with Dual Moguls on Sunday, March 31. The events will take place on Gunbarrel and World Cup runs at the California base, which is a great location for spectators to watch the thrills of bumps and aerials.
High Roller Hold ‘Em will take place on Heavenly’s World Cup run on Saturday, April 6, 2013, with a monster big-air jump designed and constructed by Snow Park Technologies, which is known for building the world’s top competition venues, including ESPN’s Winter X Games.
In this unique poker-style format, each rider will be dealt two cards with each card featuring a different trick. Each rider will then bet on the trick of their choice and must execute the trick during that jump to win that round. The rider that lands the trick with the highest level of difficulty will win that round and qualify for the winner-take-all super final and a $50,000 pot.
And in true Heavenly fashion, the party will be going off during both these events. We’ll have a DJ spinning music, beer tents, a fireworks show to end the evening and, of course, the Heavenly Angels will be on hand to get the crowd going.
Keep your eyes peeled on the mountain this spring because there’s a good chance you’ll spot someone famous. First on April 6, Shaun White will be at Heavenly to host High Roller Hold ‘Em. On Sunday, April 7, ski superstar and big personality, Glen Plake, will be on Gunbarrel hosting the GB25. Then on April 6, DJ Pauly D of the Jersey Shore will be DJing a set at Harrah’s new Peek Nightclub.
You’ll have a chance to meet some local celebs too. Our Heavenly Angels will be skiing/riding all over the mountain bringing the fun. You can spot them in their signature pink and white Helly Hansen outfits. Then to cap off the celebrity sightings, our lovable avi dogs will be at the Ski Patrol Fundraiser on April 14.
The skiing is fantastic late season at Heavenly. And with the recent storms, things are looking better than ever. I like to get here early to hit the fresh corduroy on the cruisers. Then head into the trees at Powderbowl Woods and later on take on Gunbarrel, which is usually nice and soft in the afternoon. The perfect end to my spring day? A cold one on the deck at Tamarack while the music from apres fills my ears.
