2014/15 Ski Patrol Tryouts

With the 2013/2014 season winding down, I’ve begun to reminisce about how I got so lucky in life. How did I end up getting paid to ski, do avalanche control with explosives, train my own avalanche rescue dog, help people in need, be part of the raddest team around, and ski fresh pow?

How could you not love being a part of this fun-loving family?

When I was 19, I moved to Tahoe to spend a winter snowboarding and taking classes at Lake Tahoe Community College. I had no real direction to my future plans beyond wanting to be in an active job that allowed me help people. I decided to take the EMT course at LTCC and found something I really enjoyed and excelled at. Lucky for me a Heavenly ski patrol supervisor was also in that EMT class. He began talking me into becoming a ski patroller, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Best part of the job.

My career has taken me from an apprentice patroller who knew very little to a 13-year veteran patroller who is still learning and loving it every day. On top of my every day patrol duties, I hold two other titles that I am very proud of: Avalanche Rescue Dog Handler and Apprentice Coordinator. As the Apprentice Coordinator, I am responsible for the future of our patrol by training all the new-hires. I have been proud to see the future of this patrol excel and grow under my training, and now I am looking for the next class of fun-loving, hard-working, ripping skiers who want to step up and help others. It’s all in a day’s work.

If this sounds like you and you’re ready for the adventure, we are holding our ski test Saturday, April 5, 2014. You must register online prior to attend the clinic, click here to register. For all the details on the job and the ski test please give us a call at 530-542-5175.

Hope to see you there,
Kris Morehead
Apprentice Coordinator
