  • DS

OK. Dumb newbie question. Why does the run status say 3 runs are open but only two show a little green box ?

    http://www.skiheavenly.com/the-mountain/terrain-and-lift-status.aspx

  • Megan

Hi DS, Thanks for catching that Tamarack Return was missing from our Terrain Status. It has been updated and should be visible as open soon.

  • Tom

Why does Heavenly shut down every time it snows? Now you close because there is an “incoming storm”. I guess that’s the Vail culture?

  • Ashley Smith

Hi Tom! We actually closed yesterday because of the winds associated with the incoming storm. Sorry about the confusion!

  • Scottbjones

Any chance for some beginner runs for my 6 year-old?

  • Ashley Smith

Hi Scottbjones! Right now we have Orion’s, Tamarack Return and Upper California Trail open which are all blue squares – intermediate runs. We do have a magic carpet running for ski school participants at the Top of the Gondola too. Last night we made lots of snow on Big Easy and Red Fir, which we hope to open soon and then we will have some beginner terrain open. We will keep you updated! Thanks for the question.

  • DS

Confused again. Making snow on all those runs – Dipper, Comet, etc, but not showing as open ??Hoping to get the kids on Dipper if it is open. Is Orien as tame as Big Dipper ?
May head to Northstar for more green until dipper and Big Easy open up.

  • Ashley Smith

Hi DS! We did make snow on those runs listed in preparation to get them open soon. It looks like Dipper will be next to open this week. Orion’s is one of our easiest intermediate – blue runs. It is a good transition from green to blue. We are hoping to get Big Easy open as soon as we can.

  • Ashley Smith

Hi DS! We made snow on all of those runs in preparation to open them as soon as conditions allow. We do plan to open Big Dipper this week though! Orion’s is one of our easiest intermediate/blue runs. It’s a good transition from beginner to intermediate. We made snow on Big Easy in hopes to get that open too, but there is no projected date for that opening yet.

  • Tom

11/20 another day with some wind–and another day Heavenly is closed–is this the third day out of 7?

  • Mtdestroyer

seriously…ive never been anywhere with as much wind hold…and some places way windier..whats up with that…booo

  • RachelRoberts

Hey- Believe me, we don’t like wind holds either! Our mountain ops teams take into careful consideration wind speed, direction and forecast before calling it for the day. Early season is tough since the Gondola is the only access point to the mountain and it’s exposed to wind the most.

  • Tom

Update–Friday 11/21—-another day of wind—and another day Heavenly is closed–do chairs not run when there is some wind? can’t you slow them down? in the spring will they be closed because they will be on sun hold?

  • Tom

oops–should be Wed 11/21!!! but they might be on hold on Friday as well!!!

  • Ashley Smith

Hi Tom! At this time only the Gondola, Tamarack Express and Dipper Express are running (plus 3 surface lifts.) Unfortunately the winds those days were strong, with very strong gusts that were directly hitting the Gondola and Tamarack Express. We are currently (and have been) pushing hard with snowmaking to make as much snow as possible, and snow from Mother Nature is in the forecast for this week. We are trying to open more terrain and base lifts ASAP, so if strong winds are hitting the Gondola, then guests can access the mountain through a different way (it shouldn’t be long!) Our Mountain Operations Team does everything they can to run the lifts, including slowing them down. When we close a lift for wind it is for everyone’s safety. We don’t want to be on wind hold as much as our guests and pass holders don’t want us to be! Thanks for your post!

  • Nevadavoter1

In reply to mtndestroyer about never seeing so many wind holds, as a former patroller at Whistler and instructor at Heavenly, believe me, wind holds are very necessary and protect the public, mountain employees and lifts from catestrophic failure from chairs and gondolas swinging in to towers and even trees along side the lift run.  Many of the newer lifts have a fail safe that do not allow them to turn if the winds are too high.  If you have ever had to be evacuated from a lift because it went down due to high winds with folks aboard, you would really appreciate wind holds that stop the public from boarding during these events.  A lot of planning goes in to lift placement and design to minimize wind problems but when you live and work in the mountains, wind is a way of life.  Wind holds are inconvenient but so are stop lights and painted lanes on our roads.
On a brighter note, it would be interesting to know from mountain management where snowmaking is underway and what they are shooting for in new terrain opening if conditions permit.

  • Ashley Smith

Hi Nevadavoter1! Our snowmakers have been making snow on Red Fir, Big Easy, Big Dipper, Comet, Lower California Trail, Sky Meadows, Sky Chute, Ante Up, Von Schmidts, and the Tubing Hill. Our Ski Patrollers and Mountain Operations Teams are prepared to evaluate each run as the snow falls this week and to open them once they are safe for skiing/riding. With the combination of snowmaking and the incoming storms this week, we are planning to open more terrain asap! We’ll keep you updated on this blog, on the Snow Report section of skiheavenly.com, twitter @skiheavenly and at 1-800-HEAVENLY. See you out there!

  • TK

looks like another wind day closing down the mountain–I wonder if Kirkwood and Northstar will follow the and close down whenever the wind kicks up—if so, I wonder if it is worth buying a pass. I’ve been evacuated from chairs and trams and know all about the safety issue–but have never seen a resort shut down so frequently because of wind

  • Ashley Smith

Hi TK. Since the only lifts scheduled to operate at this time are 3 surface lifts plus the Gondola, Tamarack Express and Dipper Express, when it’s too windy to operate those lifts, the “whole mountain” ends up being on wind hold or closed. Normally, when it is too windy for the Gondola, we would advise guests to enjoy the California side or head to Stagecoach and Boulder areas to ski/ride. We are expecting snow through Sunday and then we will be evaluating each lift and run, in hopes to open as much terrain and as many lifts as possible. We understand your frustration (we all want to ski/ride!), but the mountain is on hold for safety of our guests. Kirkwood and Northstar evaluate each of their lifts based on their winds and only put lifts on wind hold when they have to (like Heavenly!) Once we open more terrain we think everyone will be pretty happy. Until then, we hope you can enjoy Kirkwood and Northstar when Heavenly is on wind hold. The last day to purchase a season pass is this Sunday, Dec 2nd, starting at $419 for an adult. You’ll have access to 10,270 skiable acres, 3 resorts, great snowmaking at Heavenly and Northstar, and the most snow in Tahoe at Kirkwood. We hope you understand.

  • PeterV

    Ashley well said !
This is Pete Im a lift operator on the Nevada side  Alan and I were ready for skiiers yesterday at Dipper Base with Sam and Derick at the top ,we worked hard to prepare for everyone, but the gusts that started hitting us at 8:30 were very strong which always brings safety issues up ! We were told to shut down later and believe me I was looking forward to seeing the people coming down the slopes like Mon and Tues having a great time and then greeting them  ,  as this is my first year working at Heavenly but my 20th with this mtn as my home ski area and I have always had a season pass !
The beauty of this pass is 3 local mountains and a lowwwww price 419 $ is only 4 ski days ! and change  .
TK believe me when its too windy we are all dissapointed but the wind brings the SNOW !!!
Hope to see you on Dipper

  • Johndc

I understand the safety issues, and certainly can’t blame anyone for shutting down lifts in high winds.  But it would be useful to those of us trying to plan trips to get some idea of how soon more terrain is likely to open, once the wind calms down.  The usual response that ”more terrain will open as soon as possible” is frankly not very helpful.  Would it be safe to say that if the current storm delivers 2 feet or more as expected, you’re likely to open most of the blue groomers at least?

  • Ashley Smith

Hi Johndc! I understand how it can be frustrating when trying to plan a trip, but we do our best to keep you updated by having our Daily Snow Report blogs here, Twitter, Facebook, two reports on the website (on the Snow Report page and the Terrain & Lift Status page), our snow phone at 1-800-HEAVENLY and other various outlets. We give as much information as we are told and know. Unfortunately, our Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations teams can’t make statements like, “If we get 1.5 feet of snow, we can open this, this and this.” It comes down to looking at the specific trails at a given time and seeing if they are ready to be open or not. It also depends on the type of snow that Heavenly received on each of those trails. Luckily, Heavenly has received a good amount of snow over the last few days, and Heavenly’s high elevation guarantees that we will have the best snow quality in the Tahoe Basin. Heavenly’s General Manager gave us a few statements here in our recent terrain status blog: http://bit.ly/YF7hGl, so you can read our terrain update straight from our GM! The mountain is looking great out there now, and he says that they are pushing to open a lot of terrain on Monday. If I was to guess, I would guess there will be some blue groomers opening tomorrow! Comet Express and Comet trail were ready to open on Saturday (yesterday), but the mountain was on wind hold. I hope this helps!
