Hiking to the Top of Cave Rock

It’s hard to dispute that the best views in Lake Tahoe are at the top of Heavenly’s Gondola, but if I had to name a close second, I’d have to say it’s atop Cave Rock. This short hike right off highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe provides 360 views of the lake and surrounding areas that will take your breath away.

If you’ve been to South Lake before, you’ve almost certainly passed through the Cave Rock tunnel on hwy 50 near Zephyr Cove.

The hike to the top of Cave Rock is a short one (about 15 minutes total), but it does have some steep elevation changes and a bit of a scramble over steep rocks to get to the top. I wouldn’t recommend this for smaller children.

To find the trailhead, head north on Highway 50 (toward Incline Village from South Lake). Turn right on Cave Rock Drive and follow the road until it dead ends. You should be able to park in the gravel on the side of the road. Follow the trail toward the big rock and you’re there!

Once you catch your breath from the quick climb, find a spot to take in the incredible views. Here are some pictures I took the last time my husband and I were there.

That’s about all you need to know to find Tahoe’s second-best views. :) Any questions? Leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.
