The Lakeview Commons began as a dream in 2004 by City Council members and last week, during the ceremonial opening, everyone saw their dream become a reality. The new space along El Dorado Beach in South Lake Tahoe offers a little something for everyone – sandy beaches, kayak and paddle board rentals, live music, a fire pit and picnic areas. Here’s a peak into what I’ve experienced at the new Lakeview Commons.
Last week I went standup paddle boarding for the first time. My friend and I went down to El Dorado Beach to try out South Tahoe Standup Paddle’s local’s night. And let me tell you, it was a blast! We got our boards and mini lessons and were out on the water around 6:30pm. I loved being out on the water for sunset; it was a great, calming way to end my day. South Tahoe Standup Paddle also rents kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats.
If you’re looking for a good time this weekend, June 30 – July 1, Race the Lake of the Sky will be taking place at El Dorado Beach. Some of the best competitors in the world will be racing in the morning and for those of us who prefer just to spectate, there will be a beer garden, bonfires, and live music.
Speaking of live music, every Thursday this summer through September 6 from 4:00-8:30pm a different band will perform on a temporary stage built in the sand. I went last night to see the local favorite band, Dead Winter Carpenters, kick off the series and it was spectacular. The place was packed with families, visitors, people of all ages enjoying the gorgeous weather and awesome venue. The new amphitheater-style seating is the perfect way to enjoy the tunes, views and BBQ’s (yep, they have a brand new picnic area with built-in grills). It’s definitely going to be my Thursday night ritual. For the full concert line up click here.
Now let’s get to the grub. Lakeview Café is not your average beachside snack hut; their menu is highlighted with healthful, organic and local products. The café offers a variety of gourmet sandwiches, locally made ice cream, milkshakes and smoothies. I dined on the Curried Chicken Salad Pita and it was so delicious. I also had my eye on the Brie, Pear and Strawberry Grilled Cheese – guess I’ll have to go back!
The new Lakeview Commons is a great place for visitors and locals alike to enjoy the picturesque Tahoe summer. What is your favorite part of the new lakeside space?
