Spring Skiing with A-Pow

Spring Skiing with A-Pow

I can’t believe the season is winding down already, and spring is in full force. There is nothing better (other than a powder day) than skiing spring corn snow under the sun with the most incredible views around. Spring can be a little tricky; but once the snow starts going through the melt freeze cycle you can usually find some really smooth hero snow. You want to make sure you are skiing or riding the right exposures at the right time of day. Move around the mountain with the sun, I always recommend starting on the north eastern facing slopes, like Dipper and Comet. And move towards California as the sun does. And don’t forget the afternoon slush bumps and of course a fresh layer of spring wax and your sunscreen.

Editor’s Note: Amy McCormick is the Executive Assistant for the VP of Marketing at Heavenly Mountain Resort. She grew up in the Bay area, spending her weekends skiing all over the Tahoe Basin. She moved up here 18 years ago to attend Sierra Nevada College so she could spend as much time on skis as possible (and of course get an education). She has worked in the Ski industry for over 12 years and is a PSIA and USSA certified ski coach as well as a member of the K2 Women’s Alliance Ski Team. She helped pioneer the Expedition Kirkwood Women’s program and has helped female skiers discover that they can ski as hard as the guys. Her passion is getting people involved in the sport. “I love watching people accomplish things they never thought possible and taking them to places they would never take themselves.”
