Advice: Ever Wonder How To Dress Your Kids?

Around our house some of the most hectic mornings are getting our three kids ready for a day of skiing. How to dress them is always the big question. Due to the ever changing Sierra conditions, it’s difficult to plan on what the weather will be for the entire day. Kids can be very active and so it is important not to overdress them. A good rule of thumb is to dress your kids the same way you would dress yourself- in layers. I have a few key suggestions that I hope will help your family get prepared from head to toe.

First, like parents, kids should wear helmets. Usually this is enough to keep their heads warm. As for keeping the upper body comfortable, a light under layer followed by a turtle neck. Both layers should be made of a synthetic material to keep perspiration wicked from the skin. This ultimately keeps them warmer, too! On the colder days, a fleece over the turtleneck is a good idea. As for the legs, a pair of thermal underwear covered by water resistant overalls. The overalls are a little more difficult to get on and off but are great for keeping the snow from going down the back. Finally, a water resistant jacket to wrap them up and you are set for any kind of weather.

When getting dressed don’t forget the feet and hands! For the feet, a fitted ski sock is a must. Something made of a synthetic material is much more comfortable then the standard cotton sock; one pair is sufficient. Extra socks can just be plain uncomfortable and do not provide more warmth. For the hands, you’ll want gloves or mittens. Pay close attention to how they are made. Some types are hard to get on and have stay on. The ideal is a mitten that has the ability to open up for their hand to get into. Now to finish the perfect ski outfit, your child must have eye protection, goggles or sunglasses, depending on the weather.

In conclusion, apply sunscreen, pack a small snack in their pocket and out the door they go! Dressed up and energy up, they’ll be sure to have a super day on the mountain!
