Snow near Stagecoach
Hooray for snow! Kevin Higgins, our Gondola lift maintenance manager, is reporting three to four inches of Mother Nature’s finest at TOG. Check out the
web cams for the latest (and, yes, we know that the Dipper cam isn’t working – I’ll explain that one at another time). Although Barrett reported that it’s “not real cold yet,” his snowmaking team was able to put in another solid night, operating for over 12 hours, starting around 6:30pm last night and they’re still running as I write this. For the season, the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system has put in over 110 hours! The weather forecast from
weather.com is calling for cool temperatures and clear skies tonight, with a 30 percent chance of snow developing late tomorrow afternoon. Chris and Alex are out taking video and photos, respectiviely, so feel free to check back later today (Check out the photos at our
photo gallery). Hope everyone’s been doing their wall sits!

I was working graveyard at the Marriott and it was very exciting to see all the snow. It was still snowing when my shift was over at 7AM too! I can’t wait to hit the slopes!

Are you going to open with a small park setup? If so what kind of features do you expect? Boreal has opened with about 10 and they have 20 now including a small jump line.

You guys are great! I have seen the snowmaking video and was impressed that you guys were working so hard and even throughout the nights. Thank you for the efforts. I have a lot of respect for you.

Sorry if this question is posted in the wrong forum…but, i have a strategy question for those in the know. My wife and i are staying at Harrah’s and plan on renting skis to hit the slopes. We are torn on weather we should rent at Harrah’s and walk down to the Gondola with all our equipment, or rent at the base of the Gondola. I don’t really like the idea of carrying all that stuff down there, but I have to think the lines will be much more manageable at Harrah’s. Thoughts?

Russ:
What is the latest? Looks like some nice work at East Peak over the cold weekend. Will both Dipper and Orion make it open by Friday?

Fresh from the National Weather Service:
A FAST MOVING AND WEAK SYSTEM WILL AFFECT THE SIERRA TUESDAY NIGHT. A SECOND MUCH STRONGER SYSTEM WILL IMPACT THE SIERRA AND VALLEYS OF NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN NEVADA THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY.
… SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…
TUESDAY NIGHT… EXPECT 1 TO 2 INCHES IN THE LAKE TAHOE BASIN AND NEAR FREDONYER SUMMIT WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES ABOVE 7000 FEET IN THE TAHOE BASIN. LOWER WESTERN NEVADA VALLEYS AND THE HIGHWAY 395 CORRIDOR WILL SEE LITTLE IF ANY ACCUMULATION.
THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY… SIGNIFICANT SNOW IS POSSIBLE IN THE SIERRA. A FOOT OR 2 OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE AT LAKE LEVEL WITH SEVERAL FEET AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS. LOWER VALLEY LOCATIONS INCLUDING HIGHWAY 395… I-80 AND HIGHWAY 50 COULD PICK UP SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW FRIDAY.

We traditionally open a park when we get Comet open. Right now, the priorities are Orion’s and Big Dipper. – Russ
November 16th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
We traditionally have intermediate terrain only on opening weekend.

Brad – there are lots of great places to rent skis at the base of the Gondola. Heavenly Sports, the North Face, Patagonia, etc. We also have lockers right there where you can store you shoes for a small fee. Harrah’s is super close, but if you’re not willing to walk a couple blocks with gear, I recommend renting at the Village. – Russ

How many slopes are you guys hoping to have open on friday? It sounds like Orion, Big Dipper, and california. Any others?
