January 2009 South Lake Tahoe Music Rundown
With the fall of epic amounts of fresh powder, the music and entertainment scene in South Lake Tahoe picks up over the winter months. The following music rundown will help you pick from the wide range of nightlife in town whether you are visiting the area or a South Lake Tahoe local. There is a wide range of music in January ranging from Hip Hop, reggae and punk to dance music and bluegrass. There is something for everyone in the South Lake Tahoe music scene, so after you’ve changed out of your ski pants, get out of the cabin for the night and find a hidden gem of a band in South Lake Tahoe this month.

Check out Chip Chop and Vokab Kompany at the Divided Sky in Meyers, CA. Divided Sky is about five miles from South Lake Tahoe. This show will be solid. Vokab Kompany brings a Hip Hop sound paired with electronica sonics. Vokab Kompany stops into South Lake Tahoe along their Northern California tour, where they will share the stage with A list names such as Freq Nasty, Mutaytor, Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation and Ana Sia. Chip Chop is a duo from South Lake Tahoe and Portland, Ore., has a heavy big bass electro sound.

Hip Hop pioneer, Grandmaster Flash, the Turntable Legend will perform at Blu Nightclub in the Montbleu Resort Casino. The inventor of DJ techniques including the back-door, double-back, back spin and phasing. Grandmaster Flash was part of a 2008 Hip Hop exhibit, RECOGNIZE, at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in honor of black history month.

The Trespassers are an acoustic bluegrass Americana band from the Yosemite National Park. Their original music is inspired both by the beauty of the wild surroundings and by the decline of natural places like it. The band is influenced by bluegrass, old-time, and gypsy-jazz. Their touring vehicle is fueled by recycled veggie oil. Check them out at the Divided Sky.
