Opening Day Update 11.13.07

Hey, gang. Even with the new snow and snowmaking over the weekend, we still need a couple more nights of snowmaking to open with the quality snow surfaces that you expect from Heavenly. The weather forecast looks a little challenging, but the good news is that our incredible snowmaking team is ready to crank it up the moment the temperatures drop!

We will continue to update you daily over the next several weeks as conditions change. Skiheavenly.com will be updated daily with the latest information. For those of you who want to monitor the situation yourselves, you can check out the Dipper and East Peak web cams.

Think snow and we hope to see you on the mountain soon!

I hope we have snowfalls this winter.
I’m from Brazil, I’ve never seen snow in all my life.
I’m going to work this winter in lake tahoe, so i’m very exited!

    Regards!

  2. Alex F. Says:

So is opening day still planned for this Friday, or the extra days needed to make more snow are counting from this Friday?

  3. David Says:

So….does that mean you’re NOT opening on Friday the 16th, or that you’re not sure yet? Trying to firm up my plans and really don’t want to take the day off work if I won’t be able to ski…

  4. Adam Says:

How is it looking for opening weekend? Any indication as to what lifts will be open?

    Thanks!

  5. joe Says:

    12/1 open then?

  6. Jason Says:

So is there a projection for when opening day will be? The thought of no snow this weekend is going to make me cry. I’ll be sure to freeze my tears and donate them to the snowmaking effort though.

  7. Kiet Says:

Will you open by the 21st of November? Please post a reply.

  8. Mark Says:

We are still trying to make the 16th, however a lot of this will depend on weather allowing us to blow snow. Daily updates will be posted to this site, so just keep checking back here to find out the latest information.

  9. Ape Says:

Hi, how low does the temp have to get for you guys to blow snow? I heard on the news the other day that Boreal said they need it to be less than 28.5 degrees.. I think.. is that right?

    Thanks ;)

  10. Greg in Napa, CA Says:

just curious, what are the minimum requirments to make snow? I would think that you just need it to be 32 degrees of below, right? Can you make snow at night when it is colder?

  11. Stephan Says:

One of my equipment operators would like to plow snow now! If it doesn’t snow soon, how will I explain our equipment working under the new Olympic chair????

  12. marc Says:

2 requirements have to be taken into consideration to make snow. temp and humidity. if the humidity is low enough you can make snow in the mid to high 30s if the humidity is to high it takes a much lower temp to make snow. an ideal temp would be high teens to mid 20s with humidity below 60 percent

  13. Jeff Says:

According to the Snow Summit website on making snow, “resorts can make very good snow in bone dry air with the temperature at 35°, yet struggle at 25° in a cloudy, foggy atmosphere.” So I guess snowmaking depends on temperature and humidity.

  14. ismael Says:

So-as well as can be estimated-when is opening day?? Got a flight there for next Tuesday..pls give more specifics if at all possible-Thanks!

  15. Mick R Says:

    Hi,

How does the current mountain snow conditions (lack off/more) compare with previous years or historical trends? Is this years planned opening date earlier than usual or an annual date, which signifies the start of skiing in Heavenly?

  16. Nick Says:

if its raining on friday, i doubt the snow will last untill ten am. and yes 28 degrees is how cold they need it. there is a link on the whole process on this webpage. it’s not looking good, but i got my fingers crossed.

  17. MARCY in texas Says:

    LAKE TAHOE,
I WILL BE VISITING YOU ON THE 29TH! SHOULD I CHANGE THE DATES IF I WANT TO SKI?

  18. Judy Says:

A blog on what it takes to make snow might be interesting. A huge storm would be even better though..The statement about needing a few more cold nights kinda left us all hanging…Hope you update this today with some specifics, especially an opening date! Thanks

  19. Jason I Says:

As a former “snow-blower” I know that it takes the minimum requirements to blow the white stuff: 33 degrees F and less than 10% humidity. In other words it must be cold and dry to make a lot. The more humidity the less the resorts can produce.

  20. Jason I Says:

The next few days there is a minimal chance of rain in the forcast. The extended cloud cover is causing warmer temperatures at night and the precipitation in the air is quite high. I believe these are the “challanges” the snowmaking team is referring to.

  21. jk Says:

You will be open for sure by 12/1, right??

  22. Jeff Says:

Their cams don’t show them blowing snow.
I do not know about Friday. I am hoping they will open Friday, but does not look promising.
If it snows this weekend, which looks like their is a small front, maybe Monday if we get colder temps?

  23. Randy Says:

I know that they’re not giving out specific re: Friday, but “even with the new snow and snowmaking over the weekend, we still need a couple more nights of snowmaking to open” is a pretty clear indication to me… I’m hoping for snow/cold temps like everyone else… comin’ out in mid-December.

  24. Greg Says:

Will you delay day by day or week by week? For example, on Friday will you just say new opening day is tentatively 11/23?

    BTW, it’s OK to open mid-week :-)

  25. Justin Says:

    I’ve already booked a trip for Dec 3rd-the 5th

  26. Mark Says:

We will update day by day, with continual communication on our site here on the latest status and projections. It really only takes a few good days of snowmaking to get things going, and other help from “Mother Nature” goes a long way. As soon as a decision is made my management on opening day this Friday we will promptly post a message on the blogs here about it. We are sorry for no definate answer, but its a tricky window with temps and conditions.

  27. Steve Says:

C’mon snow! I booked for mid december 17-21 but if thing look too grim I am going to have to cancel. I figured most of the mountain if not all should be open by mid December right? Please say it is so.

  28. Joe Donati Says:

I already took this Friday off, so I hope they open up. If not we’ll be hiking for our turns!!!

  29. bjorn Says:

will you guys be open day after thanksgiving?

  30. Doog a looog Says:

You should be fine for mid December hopefully the mountain will open by thanksgiving. Lets wax our boards in the meantime and I will see you on the hill.

  31. Lee Says:

Come on folks! I live here in Tahoe-One day it’s sunny and 70, and the next there is a foot or two of snow on the ground. Don’t cancel trips in December-the exact same thing happened last year, and probably the year before that. November is a tricky month.
Don’t fret-it’s the Sierras-and its a weather dependant sport. The snow will come, and it will come Suddenly!

    Think Snow, Think Cold

  32. Ape Says:

I live right by the boulder lodge. It was foggy and really damp here until the early afternoon.. and that never happens! My car stayed damp :( I didn’t realize the snow making depends on humidity too. There’s no snow on the ground here at all. I can see Pyramid Peak and Tallac from here, there’s still some snow way up there, but it’s patchy. So if you’re planning to come up and just hike if they don’t open, you might be SOL. Right now it’s about 40 degrees and 90% humidity. Ugh.

If you want to check the forecast for the top(ish) of the mountain, this is close at 9190′ and an educated guess at the middle of Heavenly:

    http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=rev&smap=1&textField1=38.924583333333&textField2=-119.89625

    hope that worked.

    Keep praying for snow!
